Frequently Asked Questions About the GST Calculator
How to use the GST calculator correctly, interpret results, and avoid common calculation errors — explained by Dealintax.
How do you calculate GST on a price in India?
To calculate GST payable on a price: if the price is exclusive of GST (base price), multiply by the GST rate percentage — for example, base price ₹1,000 at 18% GST = ₹180 GST, total price = ₹1,180. If the price is inclusive of GST and you want to extract the GST component, use the formula: GST amount = Original Price × GST Rate ÷ (100 + GST Rate). For the same example: ₹1,180 × 18 ÷ 118 = ₹180. The base price is ₹1,180 − ₹180 = ₹1,000. Dealintax’s free GST calculator performs both calculations instantly.
What is the difference between GST-inclusive and GST-exclusive price?
A GST-exclusive price (also called the base price or taxable value) is the price before adding GST. GST is calculated on this amount and added to reach the final invoice amount. A GST-inclusive price already contains the GST within it. Most B2B transactions in India use GST-exclusive pricing (base price + GST shown separately on the invoice). Many retail transactions and consumer products display GST-inclusive (MRP) pricing. When issuing a tax invoice, the base price and GST amount must always be shown separately — the taxable value and the tax amount are mandatory line items.
How do I calculate GST for inter-state transactions?
For inter-state transactions (selling goods or services from one state to another), IGST applies instead of CGST + SGST. The IGST rate equals the combined CGST + SGST rate — so a product taxed at 9% CGST + 9% SGST for intra-state sales is taxed at 18% IGST for inter-state sales. The total GST amount is identical — only the type of tax changes. For calculation purposes: apply the full GST rate (e.g., 18%) to the taxable value and record it as IGST rather than splitting into CGST and SGST components.
How do I calculate Input Tax Credit (ITC) to determine my actual GST payable?
Your net GST payable to the government is: Output GST (collected on sales) minus Input Tax Credit (GST paid on purchases eligible for ITC). For example: if you collected ₹18,000 GST on your sales this month and paid ₹12,000 GST on eligible purchases, your net GST payable is ₹6,000. ITC can only be set off in a specific order: IGST credit is used first against IGST liability, then against CGST, then SGST. CGST credit offsets CGST first, then IGST. SGST credit offsets SGST first, then IGST. Cross-utilisation of CGST credit against SGST liability (or vice versa) is not permitted.
Can the GST calculator be used for the composition scheme?
The standard GST calculator (which applies percentage-based tax on the taxable value) is not directly applicable for composition scheme taxpayers. Under the composition scheme, tax is calculated as a fixed percentage of total turnover — 1% for manufacturers and traders, 6% for service providers and restaurants. The tax is paid from the business owner’s pocket and is not collected from customers. Composition scheme dealers do not charge GST on their invoices and issue a Bill of Supply instead of a Tax Invoice. Dealintax’s team advises clients on which scheme is more beneficial based on their specific turnover and purchase profile.
What is the GST rate applicable on professional service fees?
Professional services attract different GST rates depending on the service type: Chartered Accountant, Cost Accountant, Company Secretary services — 18% (SAC 9983); Legal services by an advocate to a business — 18% under Reverse Charge Mechanism; Management consulting and business advisory — 18% (SAC 9983); IT services and software development — 18% (SAC 9983/9984); Educational and training services — 18% for commercial coaching (SAC 9992); Medical and healthcare services — 0% (exempt).
